Jeremiah McGrath: A Teacher at the Edge of the Surviving Record

A brief portrait based on a surviving teaching connection.

Jeremiah McGrath enters this guitar history through one of his students. Accounts of William Foden identify McGrath as an early guitar teacher, preceding Foden’s study with William O. Bateman. A September 1945 Etude account says Foden began guitar lessons at thirteen, first with McGrath and later with Bateman. That provides a concrete place in a teaching history, even though it does not supply McGrath’s own life story. Etude, September 1945

The connection matters because Foden’s later achievement did not emerge in isolation. His musical development depended partly on teachers working before his own performing and publishing career. McGrath’s name preserves one person in that earlier network.

Little else about McGrath’s musical life has been verified. His connection here is through Foden’s education, not a documented Knoxville association.
